Besides being a good governor, Grand Duke Cosimo was also a skilled architect with a fine taste for art, building a big number of fortresses in Tuscany and in the neighbouring Emilia Romagna.

Born as a military fortress, this property has maintained the severe, spectacular looks it has always had. It is still home to some wonderful halls with wooden ceilings, fine frescoes by Felice Giani, and some majestic galleries, former defence posts, which are now event venues.
