In 1558 the Orsini family sold the property to the Cesi family, who used it as a summer residence frequented by aristocrats and in 1603, thanks to the intervention of Federico Cesi, it became the seat of the Accademia dei Lincei, hosting famous figures such as Galileo Galilei.

After the plague of 1656, the castle passed to the Borghese family, becoming part of the Papal State and then independent with the unification of Italy.
