The Medieval Castle Of Dante Alighieri's Exile Is For Sale

Historical hamlet with the castle where Dante's exile was decided for sale in Urbino

Charming organic agritourism resort for sale in an ancient hamlet in the Marche region, where Dante's exile was decided

This fabulous castle, part of a small medieval village famous for being the place where the exile of Dante Alighieri was decided, stands among the enchanting hills of the Marche region. This castle of great historical importance is today an organic agritourism resort of extreme luxury and charm for sale in the Marche region, not far from Urbino. The castle consists of six buildings spread over several levels and covers an area of 1,000 square meters. It also has a private garden of 3,000 sqm, enriched by a wonderful hidden swimming pool. This fortified village has recently been restored, preserving its original architectural and historical features.

This ancient village has a typical medieval tower, rows of houses made of dark stone, and the small seventeenth-century church of San Giovanni Battista in the center, surmounted by a modest bell tower. This jewel-village was one of the fortifications that made up the defense system of the small surrounding province. In 1250 as many as 41 localities belonged to the Province, not all under the same lord, indeed often in bloody disputes with each other. The castle saw a succession of historical events: the victorious war of Uguccione della Faggiola against Branca Brancaleoni in 1353, the return of the defeated, the dominion of Cardinal Albornoz. The most noteworthy, as a plaque placed in the tower at Castello della Pieve recalls, "Charles of Valois and Corso Donati, on 4 October 1301, decided the exile of Dante Alighieri", according to tradition, dating back to the "Cronica" by Dino Compagni, the meeting that decided Dante's exile from Florence was held here, attended by Charles of Valois and the Florentine nobleman Corso Donati, head of the black Guelphs.

Today, this splendid property has found new life thanks to its conversion into a luxury agritourism resort, offering the ideal destination for those who wish to get away from the chaos of the cities and enjoy bucolic landscapes. The village has a stone-paved road that crosses it longitudinally between the houses and the tower, until you reach an arch that closes the village, joining two houses. On the houses you can admire the rustic railings and some doors decorated with typical wood carvings.

The castle, part of the medieval village, where Dante Alighieri's exile was decided, includes stone buildings, an ancient tower and a consecrated church, which dominate enchanting little forests with their fascinating charm. The restaurant inside the resort and the rooms for hospitality use, nine in total, each with a private bathroom, are dedicated to the Great Poet. The property also includes an independent apartment of 170 sqm. The interior spaces are characterized by ancient fireplaces and stone floors of great architectural value, precious ceilings with exposed oak beams and ancient stone sinks. The decor, with attention to the smallest details, comprises collections of period objects and furniture, valuable paintings and prints. From the windows, you can admire splendid views of the surrounding forests. The exposed beams, the ceilings in slabs or panels and the local stone walls, alternating with plastered areas with warm colors, give an authentic and welcoming atmosphere. The swimming pool, in a private position, offers an enchanting view and its crystal clear waters reflect the majestic rocks on which the Castle stands. All around, an atmosphere permeated by the scent of wild roses, aromatic herbs and luxuriant fruit trees.

Immersed in luxuriant forests, this valley in the northernmost province of the Marche region is a strategic point, extending from the Adriatic Sea to the Apennines and bordering Romagna, Tuscany and Umbria. It is an ideal area from which to explore central Italy, a land of wonders. Along the coast there are beaches overlooking hills full of ancient villages and castles. Going up towards the Apennine mountains, you come across Urbino, a Renaissance town of rare beauty, and continue towards Montefeltro where you meet ancient villages, historic fortresses and princely palaces.

In 2004, this ancient village received the prestigious recognition of the Orange Flag, a mark of distinction for the tourist and environmental quality of inland towns, by virtue of its conservation of the landscape and architectural heritage. This extraordinary historical castle is, thanks to its rich past, a rare jewel among Italian luxury properties, a dream not to be missed.
